Chapter Twenty-Seven

ELLAYNE wiped another tear off her cheek, scowling at the wall across from her. Her muscles ached from training, she was pretty sure one of the bandages on her back had come loose and the injury had reopened, and the target she was practicing with was in worse shape than when she started. Her lungs burned, and a cramp formed in her side, but it all felt better than the throbbing going on in her head.

I can’t go up against Dio; his magic is stronger than mine. I’d be dead in an instant. She used her elbow to smack the target, grunting. Even if I have held my own in the past, ultimately, he’d win. She hit it again. I’d be dead. Again. He’d win.

She grabbed a wooden staff from a barrel and swung it around. The more she considered it, the more it seemed the prophecy was right. One of them was going to die. And if she didn’t figure something out, it was going to be her. Ellayne rammed the staff into the target. And then my country is going to fall. She gritted her teeth. Like Pingbi. Like Lenora. It would be all her fault. Ellayne repositioned her feet. All my fault because I couldn’t keep a stubborn old lady alive for more than twenty-four hours. With a crack, she swung the weapon at the target. The post the target sat on wobbled, and she didn’t wait for it to stop before striking again.

“How long have you been in here?” Kade asked from the doorway. He leaned against the curved frame, his arms crossed over his chest. His hair was fluffed higher on one side than the other, and he ran his fingers through it in an attempt to tame the frizz.

They had returned to Matt’s house together, much to the surprise of a disgruntled Armannii. He was furious, but mainly at himself for letting Lenora get out. After thoroughly washing his rune pen, he left.

“Since Armannii went to get an update.” Ellayne grunted as she swung around and struck the target.

“But that was hours ago.”

“Your point?” She struck the target again, this time leaving a dent. Her brother would’ve broken it in half. She tried again.

Kade shook his head. “You can’t blame yourself for what happened to Lenora.” He stepped into the room and ran his fingers over another staff. With a tilt of his head, he picked it up and faced her. “It wasn’t something you could stop. She obviously had decided she was not going to come back with us.”

“I shouldn’t have gone with her,” Ellayne said as she directed her staff in his direction.

He circled her. “Well, yeah. That’s just plain obvious. What you did was stupid.” He lunged, and she dodged it.

“Rub it in why don’t you?” She clenched her jaw, spinning to strike him on the opposite side. Kade avoided her.

“That’s not what I was trying to do,” he said, shaking his head.

“Really? Could’ve fooled me.”

“I was trying to assure
